Most laser hair removal side effects are mild, temporary, and resolve on their own within a day or two. Knowing what to expect, and what to watch for, makes the whole experience easier to navigate.

What Are Common Laser Hair Removal Side Effects?

The most common laser hair removal side effects are temporary redness, swelling around hair follicles, and mild tingling, all of which typically resolve within 1 to 3 days.

Normal and expected side effects:

  • Redness and warmth in the treated area
  • Small raised bumps around hair follicles
  • Mild tingling or a warm sensation
  • Temporary skin sensitivity to sun and heat

Less common side effects:

  • Temporary pigmentation changes
  • Crusting or minor scabbing in the treated area

Rare side effects:

  • Blistering or burns
  • Persistent pigmentation changes
  • Signs of infection
  • Rare increased hair growth at the treated site

Common (Normal) Side Effects

Redness and warmth

After a laser hair removal session, it's completely normal for the treated area to look and feel like mild sunburn. The skin may appear red and feel warm to the touch, a direct response to the laser energy targeting the hair follicles beneath the surface.

This typically resolves within a few hours to one to two days. Keeping the area cool and avoiding prolonged sun exposure supports a smooth post-treatment experience.

Perifollicular edema: the small bumps that mean it's working

One of the most reassuring side effects is also one of the most misunderstood. Perifollicular edema, small raised bumps around the treated hair follicles that look a lot like goosebumps, is a sign the laser successfully targeted active follicles. It's the skin's response to effective treatment.

These bumps typically resolve within a few days. They are not a burn, not an allergic reaction, and not a cause for concern.

Mild tingling

A mild tingling sensation or feeling of warmth in the treated area after a session is normal. This is distinct from a burn; it's simply the skin responding to laser energy and typically fades within a few hours.

Temporary skin sensitivity

The treated area may be more sensitive to sun exposure, heat, and friction in the days following a session. This is why avoiding prolonged sun exposure before and after treatment is a consistent part of Milan's protocol, and why sunscreen is an important aftercare step. Less Common Side Effects

Pigmentation changes

Temporary changes in skin pigmentation, either darkening (hyperpigmentation) or lightening (hypopigmentation), are a less common side effect that can occur when the skin isn't at its natural baseline tone at the time of treatment, or when laser settings aren't properly matched to the Client's skin tone.

This is one of the most important reasons why technology and customization matter. At Milan, every treatment is customized using the Fitzpatrick Scale as a guide, the clinical framework for matching laser type and settings to each Client's skin tone. Milan's Candela GentleMax Pro combines the Alexandrite laser for lighter skin tones and the YAG laser for medium to dark skin tones, making safe treatment possible across all Fitzpatrick Skin Types I through VI.

Sun protection before and after treatment is the most effective way to minimize the risk of pigmentation changes.

Crusting or minor scabbing

In some cases, minor crusting or scabbing may develop in the treated area. This is uncommon and typically resolves on its own. Keeping the area clean, avoiding picking or scratching, and following standard aftercare guidance supports the best outcome.

Rare and Concerning Side Effects (When to Call)

Blistering or burns

Burns are uncommon when proper protocols are followed. This includes arriving at your natural baseline skin tone, avoiding sun exposure before treatment, and coming to appointments free of product in the treatment area. When they do occur, they typically appear as blistering, scabbing, or significant redness that goes beyond the expected post-treatment response.

If you notice blistering after a session, contact your clinic. Do not pop blisters or exfoliate until the areas have fully healed.

Persistent pigmentation changes

Temporary pigmentation changes are expected to resolve over time. If darkening or lightening of the skin persists beyond several weeks, that warrants a conversation with your clinic.

Infection

Signs of infection, including increasing pain after 48 hours, warmth that worsens rather than improves, pus, or fever, are rare but require prompt attention. Contact your clinic or a medical professional if you notice these symptoms.

Increased Hair Growth

In rare cases, laser hair removal can stimulate increased hair growth at or near the treated site, a phenomenon called paradoxical hypertrichosis. At Milan Laser, this is extremely rare, as true laser technology is paired with a protocol that advances the fluence with each treatment.

How to Tell What’s Normal vs. Not

The clearest way to distinguish a normal response from something worth calling about is duration and direction. Normal side effects improve. They peak shortly after treatment and gradually resolve within one to three days.

A response that worsens, spreads, or lingers well beyond that window is worth a conversation with your clinic. Redness and raised bumps are expected and typically resolve within a day or two.

If redness persists beyond three days or intensifies rather than fading, contact your clinic. Perifollicular edema, the small bumps around treated follicles, should resolve within a few days. If bumps spread significantly or don't clear within a week, reach out.

Warmth and tingling are normal for a few hours after treatment. If that sensation escalates into something that feels like burning pain, that's a signal to call. Pigmentation changes, or temporary darkening or lightening of the skin, can take weeks to months to resolve.

If they persist for weeks without any improvement, contact your clinic. Any blistering, signs of infection, or symptoms that feel significantly different from what was described at your consultation warrant a prompt call regardless of timing.

Managing Side Effects at Home

Most post-treatment side effects can be managed comfortably at home with a few simple steps.

What helps:

  • Cool compresses on the treated area to soothe redness and warmth
  • Fragrance-free moisturizer to keep skin comfortable
  • Sunscreen on any treated areas exposed to the sun

What to avoid for 24 to 48 hours after treatment:

  • Prolonged sun exposure
  • Exfoliants, retinoids, or active skincare products on the treated area

When to Contact Your Clinic

If you're unsure whether what you're experiencing is normal, it's always reasonable to reach out. Here are specific situations that warrant a call:

  • Blistering of any kind in the treated area
  • Pain that increases after 48 hours rather than improving
  • Signs of infection: increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or fever
  • Pigmentation changes that persist well past your treatment session
  • Any symptom that feels significantly different from what was described at your consultation

Side Effects By Body Area

Laser hair removal can cause discomfort, and each Client experiences it differently. The side effects listed above like redness, perifollicular edema, and temporary sensitivity can occur in any treatment area. Some areas may be more prone to swelling or sensitivity based on skin thickness and follicle density, but individual experience varies significantly from Client to Client.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Laser hair removal does not cause cancer. The lasers used for hair removal work by targeting light energy at the melanin in the hair follicle. They do not use UV light or ionizing radiation, which are the types of radiation associated with skin cancer and cellular damage. The wavelengths used in laser hair removal are less energetic, do not penetrate deep enough to affect genetic material or internal organs, and have shown no association with cancer in any clinical studies. There have been no studies showing any long-term health risks associated with the procedure.
