14 years, 400 clinics, one guarantee that hasn't changed.
This July, Milan celebrates its 14th anniversary. That kind of milestone has a way of making you look back at where something actually started, so it felt like the right moment to share a story.
It was late 2017, and I had a chance meeting with Milan's founders. We met at what was then Milan's headquarters, a small office with just a handful of people. I got to spend time hearing their story, how it all started, and how they were set on doing something that hadn't really been done before. I knew immediately I wanted to be a part of it.
The mission they set was to lead this industry through exceptional experience with guaranteed results. They believed that if people truly understood how safe and effective laser hair removal could be, everyone would do it. Not a niche service for a select few. A normal, accessible part of how people take care of themselves. And they backed that belief with something nobody in this industry had done before, a guarantee. One price, and we get you hair-free, no matter how many sessions it takes. Our goals, completely aligned with our clients' goals. No fine print, no per-session pricing, no guessing.
It started with one clinic in Papillion, Nebraska. Today, Milan has more than 400 clinics across the country, and treats tens of thousands of clients every month. Those numbers matter less on their own than what they represent: a small idea that turned out to be exactly as needed as our founders believed it was.
I joined Milan as Chief Operating Officer almost nine years ago for the same reason thousands of others have since. People come to Milan because they want to be part of something great, a company whose mission and values you actually believe in. Milan is that place, and none of us take it for granted.
What's changed over the years isn't the service. It's who's walking through the door.
Not that long ago, laser hair removal was still something people whispered about, if they talked about it at all. It carried a certain stigma, boxed in as vanity, or indulgence, or something you only did if you had the time and money to spare. What's happened since is a real shift in how people understand their own relationship with hair.
That relationship is complicated, and it always has been. For some people, hair removal brings confidence, it's feeling like yourself. For others, it's an inconvenience they've managed for years. A medical condition or a source of shame they've carried quietly. What's changed is that people are no longer willing to treat that relationship as something to be embarrassed about. They just want it handled, permanently, and with someone who takes it seriously.
That's the shift. Laser hair removal stopped being framed as vanity and started being understood for what it actually is for most people: sanity. One less thing to manage. One less thing to think about. Milan didn't just watch that shift happen, it helped drive it, simply by being accessible and by doing exactly what we said we would do, every time.
Here's what we do.
Milan is physician-founded and medically driven, with an operations lens rooted in consistency because a client walking through the door should get the exact same standard of care at any of our locations. No exceptions on the medical side. No exceptions on the experience side. That combination, tight clinical protocol paired with a genuinely great experience, is what the lifetime guarantee is built on top of. It forces a kind of accountability that most services never have to sit with: if it takes longer than expected, that's on Milan, not the client. That single decision has shaped how seriously results are treated.
Spending less money is still a waste of money if it doesn't actually work. That's the real difference between a lifetime guarantee and a discount. Shaving and waxing are ways of renting your results, over and over, forever. At Milan, you own them. Laser hair removal is a short-term investment for a lifetime result, and once people understand that math, the decision tends to make itself.
Still, as we've grown in size, we've been relentless about getting better. We are in a constant pursuit of better, for our employees and our clients. We test, we learn, we move forward. Repeat. We don't always get it right - and when we don't, we own it and try again. Settling for "okay" just isn't who we are.
None of this works without our incredible employees across the organization.
We have the greatest teams, from our corporate office and call center in Omaha, Nebraska, to those supporting us around the country. And our clinic teams, we cannot say enough about them. They carry a genuinely deep connection with every one of our clients. They're sitting with someone who might be nervous, or emotional, or finally addressing something they've put off for years. Our teams genuinely care, they empathize, relate, educate, and celebrate right alongside a client the day they reach their hair-free goal. They're real-life superheroes, going out of their way to solve a problem permanently for every person who walks through the door.
You can have a great service and still not go very far without great people behind it. The reverse is just as true. Milan has both, an unbelievable service and people who deeply care about delivering it well, and that combination is the reason Milan keeps earning the trust it's built.
Milan set out to do something different, to make something that used to feel like an indulgence into something people could trust, rooted in results and a real relationship, not a by-session transaction. Helping professionalize an industry that touches something this personal for people is the part worth being proud of. The number of locations doesn't represent our size. It represents our reach, the reach to all the people who no longer have to deal with something they didn't want to deal with in the first place.
For all the growth, the thing worth remembering is how simple this actually is. Simple goals, a simple model, a simple message. Come to us with your hair concerns, and we'll fix them. Period.
It's the reason many of us chose Milan in the first place. Most of us fell in love for the same reason: it gave us a chance to change people's lives for the better, one client at a time. Fourteen years in, Milan is still humble about how far it's come, and still unapologetic about where it's going.
Happy Birthday, Milan.
